7 Tips for Glowing, Hydrated Skin

7 Tips for Glowing, Hydrated Skin

Have you ever heard the phrase “eat your skincare”? Glowing, radiant, and healthy skin comes from so much more than just what you apply onto your skin topically, and instead is largely affected by what’s happening beneath the surface within your body.

No 20 step skincare routine will magically compensate for a poor diet, an unhealthy gut microbiome, internal imbalances, or dehydration, which is why healing your body from the inside-out is the secret to actually achieving your dream complexion. Everything on the surface is merely a reflection of what’s happening beneath. So instead of your classic skin health product recommendations, let’s talk about our favorite skincare, from within.

#1: Eat your veggies, especially spinach.

Rich in nutrients, vitamins, antioxidants and made up of 91% water, spinach is amazing for naturally contributing to our skin’s overall hydration and plumpness, leading to a radiant complexion. Veggies in general benefit our skin cells' regeneration process, increasing collagen production as a result and reducing signs of aging. All it takes is a handful of spinach or your greens of choice to make a positive impact and boost your skin’s health and daily detoxification. Try adding spinach to your morning protein smoothie (you won’t even be able to taste it!), mixing it in with your salads, cooking it down into pasta dishes, or simply making an afternoon green smoothie daily for a concentrated dose of all the benefits.

#2: Take a powerful probiotic for inside-out beauty support.

Our skin and gut health are very much linked. A healthy gut microbiome leads to healthy, clear, glowing, and thriving skin. When our gut is unhealthy, the same goes for our skin. Taking a probiotic daily to support healthy bacteria growth in the gut will help balance out the skin microbiome too, strengthening the skin barrier and helping to lock in moisture for a dewy, plump complexion. Additionally, having a healthy skin barrier helps protect us from irritations, leading to less inflammation, redness, and acne causing bacteria. For best results, we recommend taking our Gut Glo supplement, so that you receive the added benefits of magnesium, digestive enzymes, and detox herbs alongside your dose of probiotics.

#3:  Reduce your chronic stress.

When we’re stressed, our hormones are impacted and our cortisol levels spike, which greatly impacts our skin health. These spikes increase inflammation and oil production within our skin, leading to a puffy, acne prone, and dull complexion. On top of this, chronic stress also breaks down collagen and elastin in the skin, leading to premature aging and unwanted wrinkles. To avoid these negative side-effects, try practicing stress management throughout your day and find effective ways to lower your stress levels that you can easily implement into your daily routine. Maybe turn your phone off at night before bed, try meditating, take a hot yoga class, pilates, go for a long walk outside, or even sit down for a quick breath work session. Sometimes, it only takes an intentional minute of your day to completely alter your state of mind for the better.

#4: Get 8 hours of sleep always.

Sleep is essential for our cell-repair and regeneration processes, as well as for balancing out our hormones. Quality sleep gives you a refreshed glow, while a lack of sleep leads to poor blood circulation and fluid retention, resulting in the classic dark under eye circles and puffiness we all try so hard to avoid. So besides your favorite brand of rescue eye patches, aim to always get a minimum of eight hours of sleep nightly and try taking magnesium before bed to help you relax into your sleep, tackling your puffy eye issue directly from the source. Additionally, magnesium also promotes the restoration of your muscles overnight, helping fight off soreness from your gym sessions and allowing you to wake up refreshed and ready for the next day. It’s a win win!

#5:  Include good fats into your diet.

Somehow, all fats seem to have been demonized as bad, when in reality, there are certain fats that are not only good for our body, but actually are essential for our health. Including good fats like avocado, olive oil, seeds, and nuts into your daily nutrition will keep your skin looking plump and hydrated, while also helping to balance out your hormones, leading to a healthier, stronger you from the inside out. We suggest aiming to include a source of healthy fat in at least 2-3 of your daily meals, especially as fats will help your meals satiate you for longer throughout your day.

#6:  Hydrate all day long.

Drink water like it’s your full time job. Seriously. Obviously, water is essential for our body's overall health and functionality, but it also serves as a natural moisturizer for our skin, hydrating and giving our complexion that soft, natural glow that no amount of skincare products could ever achieve. Plus, it’s free! So how much water are we talking about? Aim to drink around 60-90 ounces of water daily, or around half your body weight. And while this may seem like tons of water at first, especially if you’re not used to drinking that much, try slowly increasing your intake over several weeks and you’ll find that your body will start to adjust and actually crave that amount of water daily. Pro tip: Add in electrolytes, lemon, or infuse your water with fruit for some added fun!

#7:  Consume less processed foods.

Everything we decide to put into our body either has the opportunity to positively or negatively impact our health. Processed foods are full of additives, preservatives, and refined sugars that when consumed regularly, cause irritation and inflammation within our body that reflect outward to our skin. Try thinking about eating for your skin, swapping overly processed meals for a diet rich in whole, real foods, as this will naturally provide your body with all the essential minerals, vitamins, antioxidants and nutrients to improve your skin's health. Not only will switching to more unprocessed foods help heal internal inflammation that may be manifesting as skin issues and improve your skin’s outward appearance, but you’ll also feel overall more energized, vibrant, and healthy when you eat with the intention to nourish, rather than to just satisfy your hunger.

These seven simple, science-backed wellness rituals are the real secrets to supporting naturally dewy, glass skin, while simultaneously boosting your overall wellness. From what you choose to eat and ingest into your body, to your gut microbiome and your daily habits, it's clear that effective skincare is so much more than just your daily moisturizer and serums, and that real beauty truly does comes from within.
